Fantasia — 2.57

Nick Knight's fashion film, Fantasia, is a free-wheeling exploration of joyous, unbridled movement in model and clothing alike. Harness to this the riotous creativity of some of fashion's greatest names and you have a mesmerising, full-throttle trip around the most sensational sartorial propositions of the past ten years.

Fantasia, by its strictest definition, is a musical term: describing free improvisation and contrast of musical treatments that seldom follow textbook rules. Appropriate then that the same word should be the title of Nick Knight's latest fashion film: a free-wheeling exploration of joyous, unbridled movement in model and clothing alike.Harness to this the riotous creativity of some of fashion's greatest names - the show-stopping, decade-defining creations plucked from collections by Alexander McQueen, Comme des Garçons, Gareth Pugh, Hussein Chalayan and John Galliano to name but few - and you have a mesmerising, full-throttle trip around the most sensational sartorial propositions of the past ten years.
Worked to their fullest extent by the dynamic duo of Lily Donaldson and Jourdan Dunn, the array of outfits on show are a fashion fantasy in the very truest sense of the term.

This video is inspiring because I think that just discovering Nick Knight’s work, although I do know he is, really researching about his work now and looking and the fashion films that he has done, he has done all different kinds of elements such as this video which is all about having fun, being silly and quite childish.  I think even though it is very childish, it expresses a lot within colour, shape and it is more costume than wearable.  It is over exaggerated with size and shape, he has obviously had the inspiration from a Jack in the Box to Christmas; so it’s all about decoration; looking at the key elements of the kind of decoration and styling it is all about detail.  The whole film is also about movements, all of the models constantly dancing or jumping up and down or giving the illusion that it is very young playful, being stupid by wearing creative or shiny garments so that the kind of attitude and the mood of the movement is very hyperactive with the swaying of the dress to the jumping up and down.

Movement

·         The kind of movement in the film was kind of overall giddy
·         Very fast
·         Dancing
·         Expressive not stupid or silly dancing it is more creative
·         Fun

Sound/music

·         The music was very festival it sounded very Mexican and celebratory
·         Very fast
·         Expressive
·         It is not normally the type of music you would have in a fashion film but it related to the fun element of this film
·         The music has a variety of cultural sounds in each of the different scenes when it gets to each of the different garments

Effects

·         Fan to blow the models
·         Different angles
·         Fast pace
·         Very well edited with the effects and scenes so a lot of patients would have been necessary
·         Raised the contrast to show the colours more

Fashion

·         Definitely costume there was nothing in the film that was wearable
·         Very child’s play with a message to say even though it is crazy stuff there is a purpose for every style of clothing
·         Different characters, the Jack in the Box was very jolly and circus fashion
·         The garments have been made by very famous fashion designers so they are obviously well made
·         At the end of this film coloured powder is coming off the garments as the models jump so it gives a nice ending
·         The overall fact of the fashion in that film is it is very costume, very bright with colour, the movements is very silly, very childish and very over the top and it gives the impression of a monster kind of effect.  It is very playful as though a load of kids have gone into a trunk and took out lots of clothes and started dancing around
Artistic
·         There are all different types of elements, there are some scenes where you can see the model floating giving and element of gravity
·         The way they shake the fabric
·         The poses the models do
·         The signs and movements with arms all very bendy
·         The artistic feel to this film is one of a storyline being very playful and very creative in thinking of trying to get the models to act like they did when they were children
·         Using the correct models helps; some models would not do this type of thing
·         Even though it is very childish it is also very erotic, the way they stand and the way they crouch down on the floor
·         The movements of this video shows the artistic side of the film even though the film is all about the fashion it is also about who wears that certain fashion and who can give it life.  The fabric can’t move on its own; the only way that the garment can have that sort of life is how the model reacts and moves
·         Each model has to relate to how they were when they were young, not pretend, just how you felt in that moment playing out what the garment is saying.
·         Throughout different scenes it repeats a certain movement to show that particular movement so that it is focused and the audience gets to see that movement as it could be important to what it is saying
·         As the film continues it gets more serious and a bit more grown up; the outfits become more grown up
·         At the end the scenes with the colour powder falling off the garment shows a strong statement of movement and colour
·         The ending of the film also stays strong; it does not fade out; they want the ending to show it and then carry on
